Daughter. Sister. Aunt. Social Justice Activist. Medical Student.

Happy Hump Day! As you saw from my instagram, I was doing a little bit of traveling. From April 12th - April 16th, fellow medical students and I attending SNMA Annual Medical Education Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. AMEC is where minorities in medicine (or those aspiring to enter medicine!) get together for workshops, networking, and fun. The conference had over 1,800 people attending, a record number! When I tell you that place was just a congregation of black excellence, coconut oil, and support, it's not even an exaggeration.

This was the first time in my life that I have been surrounded by so many minorities in medicine! At my school, only 6 black students (3 males and 3 females) started in our class of 165 students. that is only making up 3.6% of our class. How crazy is that? The amount of black people and African-Americans in medicine truly do not reflect the population number in the united States. But, I digress. The conference was 3 days of workshops, seminars, free food and items, exhibitors, and fun!

Also, 2 of my sisters and 6 of my nieces and nephews live down in Atlanta, so I got to spend a lot of time with them! They took me out to a soul food spot called Mary Mac's. When I say that I've never had some GOOD grits until that day, I'm not even exaggerating. Those cheese grits were LIVE. I miss it already. And then all of us when strawberry picking! It was my first time, and it was so much fun!

Next year AMEC will be held in San Francisco! I'm definitely going to be there. Let me know in the comments if you are interested in attending as well. I hope to meet you there!

Funny story: I met the rapper Young Joc in the elevator, and I accidentally called him the wrong name. D: I had a J name on the tip of my tongue and that's what came out. So embarrassing lol. Below are some photos from the conference!

First and foremost, I LOVE fashion. I can tell you right now, my closet is overflowing lol. But, the most important thing for me with my outfits is that I feel comfortable. If I don't, I'll be fidgeting, readjusting, and generally just feeling self-conscious.

To combine my love of fashion with the need to be comfortable, I would describe my daily style as comfy cute: it has some style but comfortable enough for every day wear. Since I'm on a student budget, I always try to find inexpensive items so I can satisfy the inner shop-a-holic in me (lol). Below is today's outfit. I got tons of compliments on it!

Dress (I originally got it for $15, but they sell similar ones on their website!) ~
Shoes (I linked similar ones. Right now, Charlotte Russe has free shipping and a discount on shoes!)

So many people will ask you, "Why medicine?" The usually answers are , "I want to help people" "I love science" or even "Money."

But a questions that have always prodded me was, "What is your deepest desire in medicine? Is it truly your niche? Are you willing to open your heart and mind to allow people to be completely vulnerable with you?"

    That's the word: Vulnerability.

Medicine is seeing people at their most vulnerable. Sharing with you their deepest concerns, questions, hopes, and desires. Sometimes, patients share with you things that they don't even share with their closests friends or companions. That, right there, is ultimate trust. What a privilege!

    Why medicine for me?

    • I want to mend a person physically, emotionally, and spiritually in a non-judgemental compassionate manner
    • I want to set an example for other minority students that it is possible to attain and succeed in these positions
    • My overall life goal: to make each person I am in contact with feel as important as they truly are
    • Personally, my life is more fulfilling if I am serving others
In medicine, I get to hit these life-goals of mine. So, yes I do want to help people, and I do love science. But there is much more to it than the surface answers. I have long-term goals that I hope to continually fulfill.

So, now I'm challenging you: Have you truly self-reflected on why you want to go into medicine? What are your goals in medicine? What are your life goals? Is there any altruism in your desire to enter medicine? Will you truly be fulfilled?

    Have a lovely week!

Hi! Welcome to Peace of Riesee.

I am currently a second year medical student at a medical school in the United States. For the longest time I've wanted to start a blog. Personally, I never felt like I've lived an 'exciting' life or can offer the greatest advice. But what I can offer is a look into my life.

Here, I want to share my journey. My struggles. Loves. Passions. Defeats. Victories.

Hopefully along the way you find something that inspires you, just like how other people's stories have inspired me.
