SNMA 2017 Annual Medical Education Conference
Happy Hump Day! As you saw from my instagram, I was doing a little bit of traveling. From April 12th - April 16th, fellow medical students and I attending SNMA Annual Medical Education Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. AMEC is where minorities in medicine (or those aspiring to enter medicine!) get together for workshops, networking, and fun. The conference had over 1,800 people attending, a record number! When I tell you that place was just a congregation of black excellence, coconut oil, and support, it's not even an exaggeration.
This was the first time in my life that I have been surrounded by so many minorities in medicine! At my school, only 6 black students (3 males and 3 females) started in our class of 165 students. that is only making up 3.6% of our class. How crazy is that? The amount of black people and African-Americans in medicine truly do not reflect the population number in the united States. But, I digress. The conference was 3 days of workshops, seminars, free food and items, exhibitors, and fun!
Also, 2 of my sisters and 6 of my nieces and nephews live down in Atlanta, so I got to spend a lot of time with them! They took me out to a soul food spot called Mary Mac's. When I say that I've never had some GOOD grits until that day, I'm not even exaggerating. Those cheese grits were LIVE. I miss it already. And then all of us when strawberry picking! It was my first time, and it was so much fun!
Next year AMEC will be held in San Francisco! I'm definitely going to be there. Let me know in the comments if you are interested in attending as well. I hope to meet you there!
Funny story: I met the rapper Young Joc in the elevator, and I accidentally called him the wrong name. D: I had a J name on the tip of my tongue and that's what came out. So embarrassing lol. Below are some photos from the conference!
